To clarify the role of BMP during healing of extracted tooth sockets, gene expressions of BMP-2 and -6 were studied using in situ hybridization.
No expression of BMP-2 mRNA, was found at 1 day after extraction. At 2 days, intense signals were observed in connective tissue cells near the clot. Intense signals also were found in cells located near and along the crest of interalveolar septum. Up to 2 weeks after extraction, no specific expression of the BMP-2mRNA was not noted in the extraction tooth sockets.
Expression of BMP-6 mRNA was detected in the clot, and connective tissue cell near the clot and extraction sockets at 1 day after extraction. At 3 days, intense gene expression appeared in the connective tissue cell located area from regenerated oral epithelium covering the extraction socket to the interalveolar septa. The osteoblasts located along the socket wall did not express BMP-6 mRNA. Up to 2 weeks, no obvious expression was observed in the extraction tooth sockets. The cells expressing BMP are considered as the preosteoblasts. These findings indicate that BMP has an important role in the early stage of bone regeneration, especially the initial stage of osteoblast differentiation.
