A mixture of non-sintered CO<SUB>3</SUB>apatite and enzymatically-treated collagenwas produced and named as an apatite-collagen composite. UV ray-irradiation had been applied to increase insolubility of CO<SUB>3</SUB>apatite-collagen composite by enhancing cross-links of the collagen fibers. The effect of UV ray-irradiation on the atelocollagen, one main component of CO<SUB>3</SUB>apatite-collagencomposite, was investigated. Solubility of collagen gel was analyzed by hydroxyproline assayafter collagenasedigestion. Insolubility of the composite-collagen after UV ray-irradiation was also studied. The results showed that UV ray-irradiation on the apatite-collagen composite is a reliable method to increase insolubility of the composite. To investigate the biocompatibility of the composite <I>in vitro</I>, cytotoxicity test by L-929 cell culture was carried out. Cell growth in UVray-irradiated composite-dissolved MEM was no less than the control MEM, and thecomposite could be regarded as biocompatible.
