The formation of the median palatal suture following growth of the palatal process of the maxilla in mice was studied by light, stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy.<BR>This suture was formed between the right and left palatal processes, it was L-shaped and its tip was directed anteriorly. The anterior region of this suture was formed in two steps, cell aggregation and the formation of collagen fiber bundles. Formation of the posterior region took place in four steps, cell aggregation, the appearance of secondary cartilage cells, synchondrosis and gradual ossification of the secondary cartilage. Thus the main components of these two regions were collagen fiber bundles in the anteria and secondary cartilage in the posteria region.
