Cortical projection areas (layers) from trigeminal proprioceptive inputs were studied by recording the cortical surface and the intracortical potentials evoked by stimulation of the masseteric nerve (MASS), the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and the periodontal membrane (PERI). Large surface positive (P) and negative (N) waves from MASS were recorded in the anterior and posterior coronal gyri, and in the anterior lateral sygmoid, while only N waves were recorded in the middle coronal gyrus.<BR>Large P and N waves from PERI were recorded in the anterior coronal gyrus and those from TMJ in the posterior. The largest intracortical N waves from MASS were recorded at a depth of 2.0-2.5 mm in the anterior coronal gyrus and in the anterior lateral sygmoid, at a depth of 4.0-4.5 mm in the middle coronal gyrus, and at a depth of 0.5-1.0 mm in the posterior coronal gyrus.<BR>Those from TMJ were recorded at a depth of 4.0-4.5 mm in the middle coronal and 0.5-1.0 mm in the posterior coronal gyri. On the other hand, those from PERI were recorded at a depth of 1.0-1.5 mm in the anterior coronal and lateral sygmoid gyri, at a depth of 2.0-2.5 mm in the middle coronal and at a depth of 0.3-0.5 mm in the posterior gyri. Histological examination revealed that the major intracortical projection layers of MASS and PERI inputs were located in lamina IV-V of area 3 a and in lamina V of area 6 aβ, TMJ in lamina IV-V of area 3 a. All proprioceptive inputs were found to be located in lamina II-III of area 3 b.
