Effect of salivariadenectomy upon the anterior lobes of pituitary gland s of rats

We observed the histological changes in pituitary anterior lobes and measured LH, FSH and testosterone in plasma of rats after salivariadenectomy. Male and female rats were sacrificed at 1, 3 and 7 days after extirpation of submandibular glands.<BR>The gonadotroph in the anterior pituitary showed no morophological changes till 7 days after ectomy in both male and female rats. However, the number of granules in gonadotroph of male rats were increased at only 1 day after operation, but were decreased to normal level at 3 days, whereas, in female rats, the number of granules were decreased at 1 day after ectomy and were restored to normal at 3 days following ectomy. When we estimated the LH concentration in plasma of male rats, LH was decreased at 1 day after operation and thereafter at days increased to more than normal, and futhermore gradually decreased to normal level for after 50 days postoperation. In female rats, LH were decreased 1 day after operation, but were sharply increased more than normal at 3 days and restored to normal at 7 days following salivariadenectomy. On the other hand, the level of FSH in plasma showed no changes for this experimentalperiod. Testosterone in male plasma were estimated as normal at 1 and 3 days after operation, and increased at 7 days when plasma LH were showed to increase.<BR>From these results, the characteristic effects of salivariadenectomy on pituitary, which were found on the variation in number of gonadotroph, were demostrated till 7 days after operation in both male and female.<BR>We concluded that the sex difference exists in the pituitary glands of rats withrespect to the effect of salivariadenectomy on anterior lobes, and we supeculate that the extirpation of submandibular glands caused inhibition of the secretion of LH from the pituitary glandin male rats. But it is not clear why plasma LH in female was increased at 3 days after extirpation while the number of the secretory granules of gonadotroph increased at the same day.
