Lower first molar from 18-day-old mouse embryos were used. After one-day cultivation, both inner epithelia and mesenchymal cells were regarded as undifferentiated appearance and then matrix deposition did not see intermatrix space. The existence of basal lamina was confirmed, but the fine fibrils perpendicular to basal lamina was not recognized in this stage.
However, these fine fibrils had a tendency to increase together with the time of cultivation and the trasformation of inner enamel epithelia. Ultimately, it would seem that fine fibrils were included in matrix formation.
Basal lamina and fine fibrils seem to be a prerequisite for epithelial-mesenchymal interaction. Similary, the distance between basal lamina and mesenchymal cells suggest to play a significant role for epithelial-mesenchymal interaction.
