Fung et al reported that electro-acupuncture depressed the jaw-opening reflex induced by dental pulp stimulation in rabbits. The present study was carried outto determine a higher limit of the brain concerning the acupuncture suppression of the jaw- opening reflex. In the experiments, albino rats were used. The animal was anesthetized with Nembutal (45 mg/Kg), and EMG responses of the digastric muscle elicited by electrical stimulation to the pulp of the lower incisor were summated 20 times by means of ADOSCOPE (ATAC-250, Nihon Koden, Tokyo). Electroacupuncture (5 Hz, 1 msec, square wave) was applied to the fore-paw (Ho-Ku) and the elbow (Chu-Chi). Transection of the brain was made with a small spatula at various levels. After experiments, the level of transection was verified histologically. Transections of the brain at any levels rostral to the thalamus and hypothalamus did not affect the electro-acupuncture suppression to the jaw-opening reflex. When the anterior hypothalamus was injured, however, the jaw-opening reflex was not reduced by electro-acupuncture. Therefore, it is assumed that suppression of the jaw-opening reflex during electro-acupuncture is due to descending inhibition from the anterior hypothalamus to the trigeminal sensory motor systems
