A Study of Cognitive Mapping of Japanese Cities by Foreign Students

This paper aimed to analyze distortions of cognitive mapping of 17 cities in Japan by foreign students studying at universities within Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The students were asked to indicate locations of the designated cities on the map. Based on the compiled dates, gravity centers of cognitive mapping and degree of dispersion from the centers were statistically analyzed.The findings obtained are summarized as follows:(1) As to cognitive mapping, many cities located distant from Tokyo were mapped much more away from their actual locations. Relation between distance from residence of the students and difference in cognitive mapping showed positive correlation.(2) Relation between distance from residence of the students and dispersion from the gravity centers of the cognitive mapping also showed positive correlation.(3) Relation between population size and difference in cognitive mapping showed negative correlation.(4) Relation between cognitive degree of city names and difference in cognitive mapping also showed negative correlation.(5) Finally, the above analyses revealed that the longer the students resided in Japan the much more acquainted they become with mapping of cities.
