An interferometer type fiber-optic gyro (I-FOG) was utilized for controlling the attitude of a satellite launching space roket for the first time in the world. The I-FOGs were installed in an inertial nevigation and guidance system (ING) in order to detect attitude angles of the rocket. The ING with the I-FOGs was onboard the space rocketM-V-1 newly developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). The M-V-1 was successfully launched on 12 February, 1997, and the engineering test/radio astronomy satellite, MUSES-B was injected into the prescribed orbit. This paper presents characteristics of the I-FOG and ING, and flight data on the M-V-1.
