A new technology called laser cladding was studied for the application to manufacturing engine valve seats. For a better understanding and suggesting a mechanism of the laser cladding process, we carried out phenomenological studies, such as absorption of light by cladding powders and the dynamic behavior of a surface melt pool, and numerical studies.<BR>Laser cladding expriment, in which Al substrate and Cu-based cladding material were used as test materials, revealed that the heat input suitable for laser cladding was ranged from 20 to 70 J/mm2; however, when the laser beam with a low power density and a low processing speed was applied, dilution of the substrate occurred readily. Consequently, the heat input range was narrowered.<BR>The temperature was calculated under the conditions of a low power density and a low processing speed. Comparison between the observed and calculated temperatures shows that the estimated maximum surface temperature is close to the observed one and the dilution is caused by the increase of the melting depth of the substrate.
