Phase change optical disk media for 830nm wavelength recording and 670nm wavelength read-ing have been developed. These media are designed by optical calculation and suitable media structures have been clarified for three types of recording film thickness (26, 40 and 80nm). The optical disks are made according to the optical design and the disk characteristics are evaluated. They have high reflectivity contrasts at the two wavelengths and a high optical absorption at 830nm. The reflectivity contrast and their margin for the undercoat and the over-coat thickness fluctuation have the maximum value at a recording film thickness of 80nm. They accomplish 1.2 times higher linear recording density than that of conventional optical disks. The erasability and overwriting repeatability of the disks are comparable to that ofconventional phase change optical disks.
