A multiple scattering effect is an influential factor in the lidar measurements of fog, cloud and other optically thick mediums. An empirical formula has been proposed for the multiple scattering correction; however, the multiple scattering effect is largely dependent on situations. In this study, the effect was studied by the Monte Carlo method for uniform scatterers by assuming the Cloud C-1 phase function that has strong forward scattering. The dependence on field-of-view, extinction coefficient, and distance was obtained by least square fitting. On the basis of results obtained, the effect of mutiple scattering on visibility was discussed and found that the error is less than 10% for a small field-of-view angle.
