Solar-blind effect in ultraviolet lidars is investigated analytically and experimentally, evaluating the background solar radiance, the cut-off characteristics of solar-blind filters, and the wavelength dependence of Rayleigh and Mie lidars. If the quality of the solar-blind filter is good, the widest altitude range is covered with the transmission wavelength slightly shorter than the cut-off wavelength, that is 305-308 nm. Using the first and the second Stokes lines of the H2 Raman laser pumped by a Kr F laser, a compact solar-blind DIAL for ozone detection with a range of 3 km is demonstrated. In the case of large lidar station, it can be expected to construct a solar-blind ozone lidar with an altitude range of 20 km by the use of a wavelength combination of 291.6 and 308 nm.
