Limnological Studies on the Water Quality of the Timber Pond at Toyama New Port
Masami ARAI, Yoko IYAMA, Mamoru WATAN-ABE and Kentaro KUBOTA, Institute of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology, Toyama Prefecture
The present study was designed to clarify the water quality of the timber pond at Toyama New Port as the first step for establishing the biological control of the environment using viviparous poeciliid fishes. Biological, bacteriological and physicochemical investigations were conducted with water samples from 4 stations at the timber pond taken monthly for 2 years from November, 1971 to October, 1973. Station 1, outside the port, was chosen as a control. The results were summarized as follows.
1. Both the pH and the salinity of water were lower at 0.1 m depth in comparison to those at 1.0m, indicating the presence of 2 water layers, so-called the salt water wedge.
2. Judged from the physicochemical data such as transparency, SS, COD and DO, the water pollution was considered fairly proceeded at each station.
3. Biological observations revealed that at each station, except for Station 2, brackish water Copepods and Rotatoria were rich while phytoplanktons were rather poor. Benthic fauna such as Bivalve, Polychaeta and Gammarus were always present at Station 2, and sometimes present at Stations 3 and 4, whereas they never appeared at Station 5.
