Pharmacological actions of alkylbenzenesulfonate (ABS) are determined. The results are as follows: <BR>1. LD50's (24hr) of 98.7% ABS for mice are 1, 407mg/kg (or.), 1, 989mg/kg (sc.), and 157 mg/kg (iv.). That of 54.8% ABS is 2658mg/kg (or.). <BR>2. After a single ABS injection of 5mg/kg in rabbits the respiration is accelerated, but the blood pressure is depressed. <BR>3. 10-5ABS solution decreases myocardial contraction in isolated hearts of toads. <BR>4. Isolated blood vessels of rabbit ears are dilated by ABS in the concentration of 10-5, but constricted in that of 10-4. 5. ABS causes the abnormality of peristalsis in isolated rat uterus at concentration of 10-5. <BR>6. Hemolysis of rabbit blood occurs in 80-90 ppm ABS solution. <BR>7. When 20% ABS in a dose of 0.15ml/kg/day is administered to rats for 6 months, the growth rate shows no differences between control and test group. On gross examination, spleens of test group rats are slightly smaller than that of control group ones.
