It is well known that patients with collagen diseases are prone to develop fungal infections, because of the difficulties involved in diagnosing and treating these patients. Among 309 SLE patients, 30.9% of whom were infected, respiratory infections were seen in 8.1%, urinary infections in 6.5% and gastrointestinal infections in 3.9%.
High incidences of Candidiasis (11.6), Cryptococcosis (3.2%) and Aspergillus (2.1%) were often seen in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. There are at least two causative factors of fungal infections in patients with collagen diseases: one is that humoral and cellular immunities are defective in those with collagen diseases.
The other is that large amounts of corticosteroids or immunosuppressants must be administered to patients with autoimmune diseases for therapy or which induces fungal infections. To protect and avoid severe fungal infections, patients with autoimmune diseases require monitoring external factors (doses of therapeutic agents administered and determinations of fungal species) as well as internal factors (host immunities).
