Retrospective clinical studies were done on patients with solid cancer and deep mycoses diagnosed at autopsy and on cancer patients with fungemia to evaluate host side risk factors of deep mycoses.
The incidence of deep mycoses in cancer patients at autopsy was 6.0%, which was lower than in groups such as those with hematological or renal diseases, and fatal mycoses were less common. Most gastrointestinal candidiasis were diagnosed as an accidental infection. Pulmonary mycoses were dominant in fatal cases, and seemed to be related with local organic disorders, such as existing lung diseases or radiation therapy for lung cancers. Various iatrogenic factors compounded and affected the onset of mycoses.
The mortality of cancer patients by fungemia was higher than that of patients with hematological malignancies. And most of them were caused by resident candida sp.
The above results indicated that deep mycoses in cancer patients at this point should be considered as terminal infections.
In the near future with more powerful anti-cancer chemotherapy, more active measures will be needed to control these deep mycoses.
