Antifungal effects of six BRMs (biological response modifiers : OK-432, LPS, lipid A, lentinan, levamisole and indomethacin) on murine candidiasis were studied. All BRMs tested showed protective effects against Candida infection. Among them, clinically useful BRMs, i.e., OK-432, lentinan and levamisole, also showed therapeutic effects against the infection. On the basis of survival curves of each BRM-treated mouse, it was found that the BRMs were classified into two groups. The first group exhibited a higher survival rate in the early stage of Candida infection, and the second group exhibited the effect in the late stage of Candida infection. Lipid A belonged to the former group, while lentinan and levamisole were classified in the latter group. OK-432, LPS and indomethacin were considered to be an intermediate group. As a possible effector against Candida infection, the important role of peritoneal macrophages (PECs) was suggested, because PECs from lentinan or levamisole treated mice showed a strong inhibitory activity against germ tube formation of C. albicans. Potential clinical usefulness of some anticancer BRMs as immunotherapeutic agents against opportunistic fungal infections was indicated.
