Two cases of subcutaneous abscess caused by Exophiala jeanselmei which affected the left lower eyelid of 70 year-old male and the right index finger of 81 year-old male were reported with their histopathological and mycological features. Histologically lesions were found to be subcutaneous abscesses consisting of polymorphonuclear leukocytes surrounded by fibrous capsules. Hyphae or catenuate spores were also seen in the host tissue. In case 1, a small wooden fragment was seen within the abscess. They were treated by total excision. The observations using scanning electron microscopy of the causative fungi revealed only annellidic conidiogenesis. Phaeomycosis and chromo (-blasto-) mycosis cases reported in Japan were briefly surveyed, and some problems on the identification of Wangiella dermatitidis were discussed.
