Some taxonomic problems have been remained in the naming of medically important Candida and related species. To examine the relationships between anamorphs and their teleomorphs, we analyzed biochemical characteristics, antigenic patterns, 1H-n. m. r. spectra of cell wall mannans, deoxyribonucleic acid base composition, ubiquinon system and cellular fatty acids of C. albicans, C. guilliermondii var. guilliermondii, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, C. pseudotropicalis, Torulopsis candida, and their respective teleomorphs. The above six characteristics of C. albicans and Syringospora albicans were found to be identical suggesting that both species are related to the ascomycetous yeasts. The characteristics demonstrated from each pair of C. guilliermondii var. guilliermondii and Pichia guilliermondii, C. krusei and Issatchenkia orientalis, and C. pseudotropicalis and Kluyveromyces marxianus were almost the same one another in each pair. These data suggest that the name of anamorphs should be transfered to that of teleomorphs when genetical, biochemical, serological and physicochemical characteristics are found to be the same between species of anamorphs and teleomorphs.
