In this report, we will attempt to discuss some of the pertinent data concerning the almost all cases of chromomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis reported in Japan and to clarify some peculiarities found in those cases. (1) Parasitic forms of the fungi: In the lesions of chromomycosis caused by F. pedrosoi as well as by P. dermatitidis the parasites occurred exclusively as sclerotic bodies in the dermis, while in those due to P. verrucosa the organism formed not only sclerotic cells but also brown hyphal elements in the dermis. In the lesions of the brain and other visceral organs caused by F. pedrosoi the parasite appeared basically as septated brown hyphal forms, while P. dermatitidis occurred as both sclerotic bodies as well as hyphal elements in the deeper tissues. In the subcutaneous lesions and cutaneous granulomas caused by P. gougerotii the organism showed septate brown-colored hyphae in tissue, while in the cutaneous verrucous lesions due to the same fungus the parasite occurred as spherical tissue forms. (2) Mycology: P. dermatitidis has dimorphous-granular and mycelial-growths on Sabouraud's dextrose agar at room temperature. The fungus in a granular phase is very slow-growing and shows at first a powdery charcoal-like appearance and later a mulberry-like heaped black colony without mycelial growth. Microscopically, it is composed of clusters and chains of thick-walled, dark brown, spherical cells (sclerotic bodies). The fungus in a mycelial phase shows a relatively slow-growing, flat, dark brown colony with mycelial growth mainly within the medium. Microscopically, conidia seem to be formed semiendogenously from the tubular tips of the conidiophores. Transformation from the granular phase into the mycelial one occurred, but the reverse was not true. By scanning electron microscopy, annellations were found on the tips of the conidiophores in some strains of P. dermatitidis.
