We previously reported that about two thirds of the patients with acute leukemia were found to have deep-seated mycosis at autopsy and that most of these patients showed markedly reduced peripheral lymphocyte count. In an attempt to clarify the mechanisms of the manifestation of mycosis in leukemic patients, experimental candidiasis was produced in AKR/J leukemic mice. Influence of peripheral lymphocyte count and of steroid hormone to the severity of the infection is studied. Mean survival of the leukemic mice inoculated with Candida albicans via caudal vein was 10.4 days. When steroid was administered with the inoculation, mean survival was markedly shortened associated with marked peripheral lymphocytopenia. Histologically both groups revealed leukemic infiltrate in most of the organs and candidial lesions mainly in the kidney, brain and heart. Above results indicate that peripheral lymphocytopenia produced by steroid which is being used in the treatment of human leukemia may be one of the pertinent factors in the development of deep-seated mycosis.
