Three toxin fractions of glycoprotein nature, which were physicochemically, biologically and immunologically different but closely related with each other, were isolated from a virulent strain of Candida albicans MTU 12024. This paper deals with biological activities of these glycoprotein toxins. All of the three toxins possessed various biological activities, i. e. lethality for mice, Limulus amoebocyte lysate gelling activity, pyrogenicity, plasma coagulation promoting activity, complement activation both in vitro and in vivo, histamine releasing activity, and peripheral lymphocyte transformation inhibition activity. It was found out that these biological activities of the toxins was also provoked by the cellular mannan isolated from the same strain of C. albicans, suggesting a possible synergistic action of the sugar moiety of the toxins. In view of these results as well as of the most plausible location of the toxins, viz. the cell wall, the toxins may be classified into a category of fungal endotoxins.
