A nutrition study of 362 men ranging in age from 40 to 59 years was conducted to investigate the relationships between alcohol intake, intake of foods, nutrient intake, nutrient density and health examination results, during the period of April 1995 to March 1996. The following results were obtained.
1) The group with daily alcohol intake more than 46 g showed higher intake of sake, beer, alcohol beverages and fishes and shellfishes and lower intake of cereals, fruits and milk products than the group with no alcohol intake.
2) The group with daily alcohol intake more than 46 g showed higher intake of, total energy, niacin and magnesium intakes and lower intake of ascorbic acid and total dietary fibre intakes than the group with no alcohol intake.
3) For the group with daily alcohol intake more than 23 g and less than 46 g, protein, lipid, carbohydrates non-fibre, calcium, iron, potassium, ascorbic acid, zinc, copper and total dietary fiber density tended to show lower values. But in the group with daily alcohol intake more than 0 g and less than 23 g, only carbohydrate density tended to differ from the group with no alcohol intake.
4) The group with daily alcohol intake more than 46 g showed higher levels of serum γ-GTP, total cholesterol and so on. But the group with daily alcohol intake more than 0 g and less than 23 g showed no difference from the group with no alcohol intake in health examination results.
