Female mice were given a single injection of 5 to 30 μg zearalenone on the various days after birth. A high incidence (about 60%) of persistent vaginal cornification depending on the dose or the day of treatment was induced. Furthermore, all of the mice daily injected with 30 μg zearalenone for the first 5 days after birth showed persistent estrus which were not abolished by later ovariectomy, adrenalectomy or combined ovariectomy with adrenaletomy. Significant reduction of the mating rate and infertility were also observed in this group. These females were anovulatory showing no corpora lutea but a few large follicles in the ovaries. Neonatal zearalenone treatment led to a significant decrease in the number of the gonadotropes in the hypophysis. From the above-mentioned results, it seems likely that hypothalamus-pituitary system is affected by neonatal treatment with zearalenone.
