This study was designed to assess the effect of hyperlipidemia on cardiovascular responses including coronary circulation to atrial pacing in a porcine model. Four-week-old piglets were divided into two groups; one fed a control diet and the other was fed an atherogenic diet for 8 weeks. Cardiovascular responses were evaluated to atrial pacing from simultaneous recordings of femoral arterial pressure, left intraventricular pressure, differential value of left intraventricular pressure, and coronary blood flow. It was found that no significant difference in the baseline values of cardiovascular function was observed between the control and hyperlipidemic groups. However, 1) the decrease in arterial blood pressure and left intraventricular systolic pressure to atrial pacing in the hyperlipidemic group was larger than those in the control group, 2) the increase in maximum differential value of left ventricular pressure (LVdP/dt max) and coronary blood flow to atrial pacing in the hyperlipidemic group was smaller than those in control group, 3) significant correlation did not exist between the percent changes in coronary blood flow and LVdP/dt max in the hyperlipidemic group. These results suggest that the functional reserve of cardiovascular system was diminished by the hyperlipidemia.
