This study was designed to induce atrial fibrillations experimentally in 10 dogs exhibiting normal sinus rhythms. In this study epinephrine hydrochloride was injected subcutaneously into each dog under chloral hydrate anesthesia. The drug was administered in total of 152 experiments in these 10 animals. As a result, atrial fibrillations were induced in total of 9 experiments in 7 animals. Some arrhythmias, such as ventricular premature contractions, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular escape rhythm, accompanied with these atrial fibrillations in all these 9 experiments. Although there was no evidence that the atrial fibrillation was initiated by such ventricular arrhythmias, the present electrocardiographic findings of drug-induced atrial fibrillation in dogs suggest that there is a possible relationship between atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias.
