To clarify the mechanisms of blood pressure rise in acute ischemic stroke, we investigated 65 patients with acute ischemic stroke (mean age 68.5± 12.2 years old). The initial stroke severity, β-TG concentration as one of the sympathetic nervous functional parameters, blood pressure and diurnal blood pressure variation were examined in each case. The results demonstrated that diminished blood pressure variations were related to both the initial stroke severity and an elevated β-TG concentration. These findings suggest the existence of compensatory mechanisms caused by sympathetic activation following acute ischemic stroke.
