We report 3 patients who suffered from paralytic ileus during the acute course of cerebro-vascular stroke. These patients, who represented 3.5% of all cerebro-vascular stroke patients treated in our department in a year, developed severe abdominal distention and could not eat any more several days or 12 days later following enteral nutrition. Bowel sounds were not noted and a plain roentgenogram showed copious quantities of gas in the small intestine and colon. Conservative treatment including fasting, IVH, enemas, and administration of the pantothenic acid (VB5), resolved these symptoms within about one week.<BR>In 2 of these 3 patients, no apparent cause of paralytic ileus was detected other than cerebro-vascular stroke, suggesting that stroke per se may occasionally induce the paralytic ileus.
