We investigated the relationship between scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) and nasopharyngeal EEG using an automatic analysis system in 4 patients with clinically-presumed brain death (41-62 years old) and in 3 patients with a clinical assessment of brain death (39-57 years old). Among the 7 patients, nasopharyngeal EEG showed low voltage and slow waves of 10∼30μV in 2 patients with clinically-presumed brain death and a flat line EEG in 5 patients. Furthermore, when the scalp and nasopharyngeal EEGs were digitized using an automatic analysis system, equivalent electric potentials in the scalp EEG from the patients were smaller than those from healthy volunteers, while those in nasopharyngeal EEG from the patients were low but within the normal ranges in some frequency bands. Detailed analysis of the nasopharyngeal EEG was thus informative for assessing the status of "brain death".
