Relation of Thyroxine Secretion Rate to Serum Alkaline Phosphatase Activity in Growing Japanese Quail Maintained at Different Temperatures

Thyroxine secretion rate of the quail from 2 to 8 weeks of age maintained at the environmental temperatures of 15°, 25° and 35°C, respectively, was determined by the goiter prevention assay. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity and body weight gain from 2 to 8 weeks of age were also determined for both thiouracil-treated and nongoitrogen-treated control birds maintained at 15°, 25°, and 35°C. The results obtained were as follows.1) The average body weights throughout the growing period were, in general, large in the declining order of 25°C. 35°C and 15°C. Thiouracil feeding at a 0.1% level in diet for a week decreased body weight gain at 15° and 25°C, but rather increased at 35°C.2) The serum alkaline phosphatase activity in nongoitron-treated birds at all the temperatures was extremely high in young period and decreased with advancing age. There was no significant differences in alkaline phosphatase activity between the three different temperature groups, while the level in the laying female was higher than that of the male.3) The serum alkaline phosphatase activity in thiouracil-treated bird from 2 to 5 weeks of age at 15° and 25°C were about 50% of the nongoitrogen-treated control birds. On the other hand, the activity was a little lower (70-80%) at the environmental temperature of 35°C.4) Thyroxine secretion rate on the basis of unit body weight was highest at 2 weeks of age and thereafter decreased with the advance of age. Thyroxine secretion rate from 3 to 4 weeks of age was higher at 15°C than 25° and 35°C.5) There was a highly positive correlation between thyroxine secretion rate on the basis of unit body weight and the growth rate. A significant positive correlation was also observed between thyroxine secretion rate per unit body weight and the serum alkaline phosphatase activity.
