In order to determine an optimal dose and duration of methallibure administration for induction of forced molting in autumn, an experiment using 124 486-day, old W.L. hens was conducted with following treatments: 40p.p.m.-14 days, 80p.p.m.-14 days, 150p.p.m.-14 days, 80p.p.m.-7 days, 150p.p.m.-7 days, and conventional starvation control.Results are summarized as follows:1. Complete cessation of egg production was appeared on the fourth day in all methallibure treated groups and on the fifth day in the starved group. The drug was more effective than the conventional starvation and no defference was observed with dosage.2. Incomplete molting was observed in the starvation group (5 out of 20) and 40 p.p.m.-14 days (4 out of 21). This would be resulted from rather weak suppression of ovarian activity compared with other high dose treated groups.3. Recovery of egg prodoction to 50% after molting was delayed according to the amount of the drug intake per day, with an exception of 40p.p.m.-14 days; namely 8 wks for starvation and 80p.p.m.-7 days, 9 wks for 40p.p.m.-14 days and 80p.p.m.-14 days, 10 wks for 150p.p.m.-7 days and 150p.p.m.-14 days.4. Hen-day production for the second year was approximately 55% for starvation and 80p.p.m.-7 days groups, and they were significantly higher than that of 40p.p.m.-14 days, and 150p.p.m.-14 days group. Hen-housed production, daily egg mass, feed efficiency behaved similarly with hen-day production.5. There were no difference among groups with respect to egg quality traits.It is concluded therefore that the amount of methallibure is insufficient with 40p.p.m. and too much with 150p.p.m.. The optimal should be between 40p.p.m. and 150p.p.m.. The period of administration with a dose of 80p.p.m. or over is sufficient with 7-days.
