Chlortetracycline and spiramycin were fed to meat-type day-old chicks at dietary levels of either 0, 20, 500 and 1, 000ppm for 8 weeks. Thereafter the chicks were fed the diet without antibiotics for another 7 days. Two chicks on each of the antibiotic levels were sacrificed for microbioassay of the antibiotic in the blood, liver and muscles of breast, thigh and gizzard at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age and at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days after the withdrawal of the antibiotics. No antibiotics were detected at 8 weeks of age on feeding level of 20ppm. Even on extremely high dietary level of 1, 000ppm, little antibiotics were detected in the muscles, while in the liver chlortetracycline was found for 2 days and spiramycin for 7 days after withdrawal of dietary antibiotic. Spiramycin was found to be absorbed more easily and remained longer in chicks body than chlortetracycline was.By histo-pathological examination, both of the antibiotics at 1, 000ppm were found to have no detrimental effect on health of Chicks at 8 weeks of age.
