A Note on Plasma Esterase Activity Levels in Chickens

Plasma esterase activities in White Leghorn chickens were determined colorimetrically by the method of OZAKI and KOIKE (1965). Alpha naphthyl butyrate was used as a substrate and Fast Blue RR salt was used as a dye coupler.Esterase activity levels at four weeks of age were compared between the birds having different esterase isozyme patterns. The enzyme level in the bird of esterase phenotype Es-1F was low as compared with the levels Es-1 FS bird and Es-1 S bird. No significant difference was observed between the enzyme levels of males and females.Plasma esterase levels of cocks and non-laying hens were higher than those of laying hens.The difference in the esterase level was attributed to the difference in the content of eserine-resistant esterases in the plasma.
