The experiment was designed to test calmative effect or sleeping effect of tranquilizers and hypnotics upon chicks. The drugs used in the experiment were barbital and 11 kinds of its derivatives, 3 kinds of phenothiazin derivatives, meprobamate, bromiso-valeryl-urea, glutarimide and chloral-hydrate.Among those 19 kinds of drugs, barbital and 9 kinds of its derivatives and chloralhydrate showed good hypnotic effect upon chicks. Allobarbital sodium, among them, is the most effective, judging from the following reasons; 1) its effect on chicks is uniform, 2) lesser quantity of the drug can show the effect, 3) its safety margin is wide, 4) its effected duration is short and 5) chicks can be recovered completely withont any unfavorable effect. When allobalbital sodium was dosed at 100-200mg per kg of body weight, the chicks showed heavy ataxia at about 30 minutes after treated and this condition continued for 5-6 hours. By 10 hours after treated the chicks recovered completely to normal conditions. There would still be some more difficulties to used the drug as a useful tool to catch chicks easier at poultry farms, but the results of this screening experiment showed that there is a bright hope of solving the difficulties.
