Effects of Diethylstilbestrol Intake during Growing Phase on the Reproductive Organs in Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica)

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of endocrine disrupters on the reproductive organs of Japanese quail. We used diethylstilbestrol (DES) as a model endocrine disrupter. Birds were supplied with drinking water, from Day 0 of post-hatch to Day 53, containing 0mg/l (C group), 0.01mg/l (L group) or 1mg/l (H group) of DES. Gonadal growth and histology as well as fertilizing ability were examined. Age of sexual maturation was significantly delayed by DES intake in male quail, but not in females. In the birds of 28-day-old, the weight of the testes and ovaries in the DES treated groups was significantly less than those in the C group. Histology and im-munocytochemistry for proliferating cell nuclear antigen also showed less developed seminiferous tubules in the H group than in the C group in 28-day-old males. The ovarian stroma of 28-day-old females contained a greater population of interstitial cells in L group than in the other groups. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the weight and structures of the gonads after sexual maturation of both males and females. In addition, all the birds in each group had fertilizing ability and decrease in this ability due to DES was not observed. These results suggest that slower development of male and female gonads, the delay of sexual maturation in males and a greater population of interstitial cells in premature ovary may be the significant end points of endocrine disrupter effects in birds.
