Effects of Dietary De-fatted Beef and its Fractions on Plasma and Hepatic Triglyceride Contents in Chicks.

As a link in the chain of the elucidation of physiological functions of beef in chicks, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of de-fatted beef and its fractions on plasma and hepatic triglyceride contents in chicks.Chicks were fed a soybean protein diet with or without de-fatted beef or its fractions (beef extract and extracted residue), and the effects of the de-fatted beef and its fractions on growth performance, the lipid contents of the plasma and liver, and plasma glucose concentration were examined. Feeding with the de-fatted beef or its fractions had no pronounced effect on feed intake, body weight, liver weight, or the levels of plasma free fatty acids and glucose. The de-fatted beef or the beef extract significantly elevated the adipose tissue weight. The hepatic triglyceride content was increased by feeding with the de-fatted beef or the extracted residue. The plasma triglyceride level was elevated by feeding with a diet containing the extracted residue, whereas it was not affected by feeding with the beef extract or de-fatted beef.On the basis of the results obtained, the physiological functions of de-fatted beef in chicks were discussed.
