A total of 56 blood samples from indigenous ducks were collected in four Provinces of Laos, namely Xienkhuang (11), Vientian (12), Borikhamxay (10) and Champasack (23). Out of 22 blood protein loci examined, polymorphisms were observed at seven loci. Frequencies of the Ptf-1A, LAP-2A and PHIB alleles were higher in the Borikhamxay population than other populations. Differences of allele frequencies at the Pa-1, Es-1, Es-3 and Es-4 loci between the local populations were small. Although the Borikhamxay population might differ from three other local populations, the coefficient of gene differentiation, GST, was estimated to be 0.016. It seemed that the Laotian duck local populations could be regarded as one population.Allele frequencies of the total Laotian duck population were analyzed together with those of other Asian ducks to draw a dendrogram based on genetic distance. Laotian ducks positioned near to the Bau and the Co population in North Vietnam. It was presumed that breeding stocks might be exchanged partly between Laos and North Vietnam. Average heterozygosity (H) of the Laotian indigenous ducks was estimated to be 0.127, being almost the same level as those of other Asian ducks.
