The dietry fiber (DF) content of grains which contain much higher levels of water-soluble non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) was determined. The five most common feedstuffs from monocotyledonus plant materials (corn, barley, wheat, oats and sorghum) used for chickens were ground through a 0.5mm sieve to determine the moisture content. The prepared samples were analyzed for crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fiber (CF), crude ash (CA), starch, total sugar, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and water insoluble cell wall (WICW). The contents of dietary fiber (DF) in these five feedstuffs were calculated on the basis of the above analytical results, with the equation as follows.DF(%)=100-(CP+EE+Starch+Total Sugar+CA)The contents of NDF and WICW are very similar in all five feedstuffs, also showing the similar values of DF except for barley and oats. Barley and oats which may have much higher levels of water-soluble non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) would be limited in the choice of chemical analysis for obtaining DF content.
