The present experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of environmental temperature on growth, abdominal fat content, rate of muscle protein turnover, heat production and plasma concentrations of T4 (thyroxine), T3 (triiodothyronine), and CTC (corticosterone) in tube-fed male layer chickens. The temperatures tested were 16, 25 and 34°C. Body weight gain was highest at 25°C and it was lowest at 16°C. Thus, feed conversion ratio (feed/gain ratios) was lowest when the birds were exposed to 25°C. Abdominal fat content was significantly increased as temperature increased. Heat production and the rate of skeletal muscle protein breakdown were significantly lower at 16°C while there was no difference between 25°C and 34°C. Plasma concentration of T3 was significantly decreased as environmental temperature increased, but plasma concentration of T4 was little affected. Plasma concentration of CTC was significantly lower at 25°C than other temperature groups. These results clearly show that glucocorticoid hormone and thyroid hormones status are affected by environmental temperature, and may play an important role in the regulation of heat production and protein turnover in layer chickens.
