The incidence and numbers of bacteria contaminated with raw chicken meat have been well documented. Experiments were conducted to raise meat type chicks by a cage system, because of separation of chick's body from their droppings by cage system would attribute to produce chicken meat contaminated with low degree of bacteria.The experiments were repeated three times in early summer, autumn and winter. Day old meat type chicks were raised to 8 weeks of age by cage and floor systems. A number of 516 male and 504 female chicks were used in early summer and autumn experiments, and each 816 of male and female chicks was used in winter experiments. The chicks were divided into two groups and they were housed in cage or floor system. Housing density of cage and floor groups of each experiment was the same as 15.5 chicks per m2 in early summer and autumn, and 12.4 chicks per m2 in winter experiments. The chicks in the cage group were housed into cages placed in windowless rooms and the chicks of the floor group were also housed in the same type windowless floor rooms. Feathers in the floor group were soiled heavier apparently than that in the cage group. Much number of bacteria recovered from feathers than that from skin. A number of 103.1 to 105.1 of standard plate count bacteria, 0 to 103.3 of coliform group and 0 to 103.1 of Staphylococcus aureus, were deteced from per g of skin of the bird in the cage group. On the contrary, a number of bacteria mentioned above detected from skin of the floor group were 103.8 to 105.9, 102.8 to 104.4 and 103.4 to 104.1, respectively. No coliform bacteria were detected form skin in the cage group in early summer experiment and also no S. aureus from skin in autumn experiment.It was suggested that a degree of bacterial contamination on skin of meat type chickens raised by cage system would keep lower than that raised by floor system.
