Plasma concentrations of unseparated (total) and separated (inorganic) calcium, phosphorus and magnesium concentrations at various times during a period between ovipositions in the guinea fowl and in the chicken were measured. In the guinea fowl, the total calcium concentration showed a decrease before next oviposition and the ionized calcium concentration did not show any appreciable change. Vice versa in the chicken, the total calcium concentration showed no change and the inorganic calcium concentration showed a decrease. The total phosphorus concentration did not show any change during the oviposition cycle in both the guinea fowl and the chicken, but the inorganic phosphorus concentration decreased before oviposition. In both the guinea fowl and the chicken, both total and inorganic magnesium concentrations decreased before oviposition. The changes in these mineral concentrations may be concerned in the characteristic eggshell formation in the guinea fowl.
