In order to determine the effect of easing and lifting restricted feeding (RF) on growth, muscle and fat weights of broilers, we conducted an experiment with the following three treatments for male broilers during the period of 1-49 days (d): G1, 20% RF (1-49 d), G2, 40% RF (1-21 d)→20% RF (22-35 d)→ad libitum feeding (36-49 d), G3, ad libitum feeding (1-49 d), where the percentages for RF are relative amounts of feed restricted to that in G3. Cumulative feed intake was largest in G3, followed by G2 and G1. Body weight, weight gain and muscle weight were largely affected by feed intake, which had a close connection with the amount of feed applied. However, the proportion (%) of muscle in carcass was not influenced by amount of food intake as well as any treatments. In G2, compensatory growth was observed when the feed restriction was eased or lifted. Fat weight was also affected by feed intake, in which G1 with the minimum feed intake showed a markedly lower value. However, G2 had a similar fat weight to G3 despite its lower cumulative feed inkake, indicating that the rapid intake rate after RF promotes the rate of fat accumulation. This suggests that fat is more responsive to feed intake than muscle. In conclusion, the increase in feed intake after the RF promotes muscle and fat weights, which contributed compensatory growth. This rapid feed intake notably accelerated the rate of fat accumulation.
