The influence of fasting on plasma insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) concentration was examined in chicks at early stages of growth. At 1, 2, 4 and 6 weeks of age, chickens were fasted for 2 days and then plasma IGF-I concentration was measured by radio-immunoassay. There was no interaction between age and fasting treatment. Plasma IGF-I concentration significantly increased from 1 to 2 weeks of age and was decreased by fasting. These results suggest that fasting reduces plasma IGF-I concentrations during early stages of post-hatch growth.
