The effects of intermittent light-period length of light-dark ratio, one to three, on the performance and meat quality were studied in male broiler chickens. All chickens were grown under a condition of continuous light until 14 days old. Thereafter they were separated in to the four lighting regimes, comprising of the continuous light (CL), half hour light and one and half hour dark (0.5L1.5D), one hour light and three hours dark (1L3D), and two hours light and six hours dark (2L6D) were applied from 3 until 8 weeks old.The chickens raised under intermittent lighting grew slower at 3 weeks of age. The body weight gain of intermittent light chickens increased after 6 weeks of age, so that there was no significant difference in body weight among the lighting regimes at 8 weeks of age. While the feed consumption of chickens reared under intermittent light from 3 to 4 weeks of age appears to be lower than those of the chickens reared under continuous light during the same period, there was no marked difference in the feed consumption of the chickens within the light regimes, during the experimental period. There was little difference in the feed conversion ratio of the birds within the light regimes during the experimental period. The abdominal fat weights of intermittent light chickens tended to be heavier than those of the continuous light chickens. The fat contents in liver of 2L6D chickens, were significantly higher than those of other chickens. The incidences of leg abnormalities observed at 56 days of age tended to be lower in the intermittent light chickens than the continuous light chickens.
