Histochemical Properties of Muscle Fiber in M. Iliotibialis Lateralis in Tsushima Crossbred and Broiler Chickens.

Histochemical fiber type composition and changes in the diameter of muscle fiber with growth of M. iliotibialis lateralis, one of the principal thigh muscles were compared between Tsushima crossbreds and broilers.In muscle fiber type composition, the percentage of type-IIA fiber in Tsushima crossbreds was significantly higher than that of broilers. At 14 weeks old, the percentage of type-IIA fiber in males was significantly higher than that of females. In allometric equetion between muscle weight and fiber diameter, the growth coefficient of type-IIB in Tsushima crossbred males was significantly larger than that of type II A and type-IIB in broiler females (P<0.05). The constant of type-IIB in broiler females was significantly larger than that in type-IIA and type-IIB of Tsushima crossbred males (P<0.05). We estimated the remainders between type-IIB and type-IIA fiber diameter, at the point of body weight of 2.5Kg by using allometeric equation (between body weight and muscle weight, and between muscle weight and fiber diameter). The remainders of fiber diameter between type-IIB and type-IIA in Tsushima crossbred was larger than that in the broiler. From these results, it is suggested that the histochemical properties of the M. iliotibialis lateralis muscle fiber in Tsushima crossbreds differ from those in broilers.
