Central administration of α 2-receptor agonists as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) robustly stimulates food intake in mammalian and avian species. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between NPY and the α 2-adrenergic system in controlling food intake in the chicken. Clonidine (CLON, 5μg), an α 2-receptor agonist, and NPY (5μg) were injected individually, or co-administered, into the right lateral ventricle of chickens, and food intake was monitored. Both orexigenic agents significantly elevated food intake, and an additive effect of both drugs was observed when co-administered. These results indicate that α 2-adrenoceptors and NPY may independently regulate food intake within the central nervous system of the chicken.
