Effect of Cool Air on the Performance of Laying Hens Fed in Free Cage with Alternate Racks in the Summer.

Because of the laying hens fed in free cage are sleeping in the upper place at night, the cool air (0.65m/s) was blown from the top of the cage for 12 hours (12:00-24:00) by 10 week-period from July 6. The performances of laying hens were investigated. It was found that the egg production rate, the egg mass and the feed efficiency were increased by 9.7%, 4.3g and 4.9% respectively, while the egg weight and the feed consumption were decreased by 1g and 0.7g respectively in the experiment cage.The air temperatures in 9th, 5th and 1st rack of the experiment cage were lower than those of the control in 0.7°C, 0.4°C and 0.3°C at 14:00 respectively, and 0.4°C, 0.4°C and 0.1°C at 21:00 respectively. The humilities in 9th and 5th rack of the experiment cage were lower than those of the control in 3.2% and 0.9% respectively, while it was higher than the control in 4.8% in 1st rack at 14:00. It was higher than the control in 1.3% and 1.4% in 9th and in 1st rack respectively, but it was lower than the control in 0.1% in 5th rack at 21:00. The laying hens in upper two racks at 14:00 were double or more in number than those of the control until the middle of August. In other time of the day, the tendency of laying hen distribution was the same as the control. At night, all laying hens in both cages of the experiment and the control were in the upper three racks. Most eggs were produced in the 1st, 8th and 9th rack. The egg production rate, the egg mass and the feed efficiency of the experiment were higher than those of the control in 6.8%, 3g and 2.9% respectively for 12 weeks after the cool air stopped, while the egg weight and the feed consumption were lower than those of the control in 1.3g and 0.9g respectively. These results suggest that, during high temperature period in summer season, blowing cool air from the top of free cage with alternate racks is effective to improve the performance of laying hens, and this effect continued for 12 weeks after stopping cool air.
