Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary limestone particle size on egg specific gravity in laying hens. In experiment 1, limestones with similar distribution pattern in the particle size with which main sieve mesh size were 0.50mm, 1.00mm and 1.68mm were used as fine-limestone (FL), medium-limestone (ML) and coarse-limestone (CL), respectively. Practical limestone which had mostly 0.50mm and 1.00mm sieve mesh size was used as control (CO). Laying hens, 350 days old, were reared individually in cages for 18 weeks. Egg specific gravity was significantly lower in layers fed FL and was significantly higher in both ML and CL comparing to CO (P<0.05). Although egg specific gravity in layers fed ML and CL was similar, the production frequency of lower egg specific gravity ranged from 1.072 to 1.080 was less in layers fed CL. On week 14, FL, ML and CL were replaced with CL, CO and FL, respectively. By the replacement of particle size from CL to FL, egg specific gravity was decreased rapidly. On the contrary, by the replacement of particle size from FL to CL, egg specific gravity was increased. When the particle size of limestone was changed from ML to CO, egg specific gravity was similar to CO.In experiment 2, limestone used in experiment 1 was provided similarly as CO, ML and CL. Another limestone which is similar to CL but the colour (light gray) was used as coarse W-limestone. Laying hens, 249 days old, were reared in group for 6 weeks. Higher egg specific gravity was observed in layers fed coarser limestone. In experiment 3, limestone was provided similarly as CO and CL. Laying hens, 540 days old, were reared in group for 26 days. The test was done in a large scale poultry egg farm. On day 12, the replacement of particle size from CL to CO was done. Egg specific gravity was higher in layers fed CL, but it became similar to CO after changing the particle size of limestone. From all these observations, using of larger particle size of limestone, 1.68mm mesh size in this case, in layer's diet was beneficial to obtain higher egg specific gravity irrespective of layer's age and rearing condition.
