Effect of Free Cage with Alternate Rack on Egg Production.

The free cage with alternate rack, which has a large capacity of hens and in which hens can move freely, were made and settled in open type poultry house. During 409 days, difference of egg production between free cage with alternate rack and single cage were studied using single comb white leghorn hens. The results were as follows; 1. The egg production of hens in free cage with alternate rack was lower during summer season and larger during winter season than that in single cage, but there was no difference in average between cage type. Average egg weight of hens in free cage with alternate rack were 1.4g smaller than that in single cage. Egg mass of hens in free cage with alternated rack was smaller than that in free cage in summer season, and in average there was 1g difference between free cage and single cage. Average feed intake of hens in free cage with alternate rack was 8g/day/bird smaller than that in single cage so feed efficiency was improved 2.4% compared with that in single cage. 2. Body weight of hens in free cage with alternate rack showed maximum at 204 days old and after that there was no increase. On the other hand, body weight of hens in single cage was increased during experimental period, and that in single cage was 400g heavier than that in free cage with alternate rack. 3. Water contents of feces in single cage was 7.5% higher at August and 4% higher at November than that in free cage with alternate rack, respectively4. Abdominal fat and liver weight of hens in single cage were heavier than that in free cage with alternate rack and fatty liver ratio showed same result. 5. The difference of temperature among racks was small at 9:00 but was big at 12:00 and 6:00. Temperature was raised with height of rack and that at middle and top racks were over 30°C in July and August. 6. Humidity was high at 9:00 and there was a little difference between at 12:00 and 6:00. From February to June humidity was low at low portion of free cage but rest of the year humidity of high portion of the rack was low. 7. During day time distribution of hens in free cage with alternate rack was high at middle portion of free cage but at night all hens stayed at top portion. There was correlation among temperature, humidity and distribution of hens.
